A Closer Look At The Seven-Ingredient Formula

The original presentation introduces the ingredients. We looked further into the published label and the research behind them to help put that formula in context.

Umckaloabo & Ivy Extracts

These two botanicals have been studied in the context of coughs and respiratory symptoms. A Cochrane review of Pelargonium sidoides — the botanical known as umckaloabo — found some evidence of symptom relief in acute respiratory infections, but rated the main evidence low or very low quality. Results differed by preparation; research on a particular extract cannot establish the effects of every product containing the plant. [2]

Ivy extract also has a body of respiratory and cough literature. The research is useful background for the ingredient’s inclusion, while the formulation, extract and dose still matter. Neither ingredient reference is a clinical trial of LungExpand Pro. [3]

Mullein & Coltsfoot Extracts

Mullein has a long history in herbal preparations. The European Medicines Agency recognizes traditional use of mullein flower preparations for sore throat associated with dry cough and colds; it also explains that clinical-trial evidence is insufficient. LungExpand Pro’s label lists mullein leaf, so that flower assessment is background rather than direct evidence for this extract. [1] [4]

For the coltsfoot component, a practical quality question is whether the supplier can provide testing for pyrrolizidine alkaloids. EFSA identifies these naturally occurring plant substances as a potential concern in some herbal products. That is a reason to ask for appropriate quality documentation, not a finding that this particular bottle contains them. [5]

Serratiopeptidase & Peppermint Oil

Serratiopeptidase is an enzyme rather than a herb. A systematic review found that the available studies did not provide sufficient evidence to support its use as a health supplement and noted a lack of long-term safety data. Its presence in the blend should therefore not be taken as proof of improved lung function. [6]

Peppermint oil is best researched in particular digestive applications. NCCIH explains that evidence depends on the preparation and use, and that oral peppermint oil can cause effects such as heartburn or nausea. Digestive research does not establish a breathing benefit for this seven-ingredient blend. [7]

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D supports normal immune function and helps the body absorb calcium. The published LungExpand Pro label lists 20 mcg of vitamin D3 per tablet. This gives you a concrete amount to compare with other supplements you already take. [1] [8]

A nutrient’s established role does not demonstrate that this finished product improves breathlessness. NIH also notes that excessive vitamin D intake can be harmful and that interactions are possible. Consider your total intake and discuss supplements with your clinician if you take medicines or have a medical condition. [8]

How to read the research: these references concern ingredients, preparations, nutrition or general safety. They do not establish that the complete LungExpand Pro formula treats a respiratory condition. We did not identify a published clinical trial of the finished formula in the sources reviewed.

What Is Actually Listed On The Label?

LungExpand Pro Supplement Facts label: one tablet per serving, vitamin D3 20 mcg and a 500 mg proprietary blend

Open the original label at full size. [1]

One tablet. Seven named ingredients.

The published label gives a serving size of one tablet and 30 servings per container. Alongside vitamin D3, it lists a 500 mg proprietary blend containing umckaloabo root extract, ivy leaf extract, mullein leaf extract, coltsfoot flower extract, serratiopeptidase and peppermint essential oil. [1]

The 500 mg figure is the total blend weight. Individual amounts for those six blend ingredients are not disclosed, which limits comparisons with doses used in individual studies.

The product presentation refers to both “capsule” and “tablet.” The published Supplement Facts panel specifies a tablet. Check the label supplied with your order for current directions and warnings.

Questions worth asking: Are batch testing and ingredient specifications available? Do the current label and seller’s instructions match? Can your pharmacist check the formula against your medicines?

Keep your care plan

A dietary supplement should not replace prescribed care. For COPD, NHLBI describes treatments such as medicines, pulmonary rehabilitation and, when appropriate, oxygen therapy. Discuss persistent or worsening breathing symptoms with a qualified clinician. [9]
